The son of a zoo owner, a deeply religious human being, is stranded in the sea with a tiger. Probably Robinson Crusoe would have used the strength of the tiger to reach land; similarly a fantastic version of this story includes fairies and silver linings. Martel keeps it simple and real, which makes for a good book.
