Me he llevado una sorpresa con esta novela. Me temía el sopor de las descripciones y del ambiente de época, pero no ha sido para nada así. Me he encontrado con un libro soberbiamente capaz de hacer un retrato de época que se adentra en las profundidades de la psique de una protagonista peculiar, Emma Bovary. He sentido como si sus ilusiones y desesperanzas, sus anhelos y dolores, penetrasen mi propio corazón. Pese a que Emma no es en absoluto una heroína, al contrario, se la podría describir como una mujer caprichosa e incluso despótica, despierta un punto de conmiseración, que tiene mucho que ver también con la posición social de las mujeres en ese contexto histórico. Del mismo modo se siente compasión por personajes como el del señor Bovary y Léon Dupuis, todos ellos víctimas en distintos grados de sus propias debilidades.
