The thing you need to remember when reading this is that it isn't Homer telling the story of Troy, it is Stephen Fry. That would then make sense when, on the odd occasion, he would bring in a modern world reference.
The first part of the book, which we we're told, don't worry if you can't remember all names and events...doesn't really matter. Oh good. Because as soon as I read each chapter, I couldn't remember.
