PJH reviewed Highland drove by John Keay
Good
4 stars
An easily readable “recreative expedition” book in the tradition of Tim Severin. The essence is (as you’d expect) that half a dozen people go hill walking and take a couple of dogs, three ponies and thirty cows with them, and the history and literature of highland droving is illuminated and expounded as they go. Also now a window back into the early 1980s and the nature of the region, life and logistics 45 years ago. If you like travelogues, walking, social and economic history, you’ll probably get on with it. I’m keeping this one.
