Four stars for the trilogy as a whole; it's more than the sum of its parts

Book One has an outstanding premise and was a little unfocused. Book Two killed the best character, had a dull villain, and ended with a crazy but exciting change of direction. Book Three did a wonderful job establishing the new setting, mucked around with time travel, and, finally, landed a perfect story beat on the final page.
What a journey. Well done, Jo Walton.
