Until the existence of this novel was discovered, it had been generally considered by the critics that The Great Gatsby was his masterpiece, although This Side of Paradise came near to challenging it, but it had also been long assumed that as a creative writer he had ceased to exist. Connected preeminently with the 'Jazz Age', that fabulous period in American history, the effects of which spread around the world, he came to be regarded almost as their official chronicler and thus share in the end of tha chapter which came with the overwhelming slump of '29.

¿Debería sentirme mal por Gatsby?

Lo bueno

Elegí esta novela en gran parte por su brevedad. Acababa de leer David Copperfield, y necesitaba algo para sentir que podía terminar un libro, "rápido". Cumplió su cometido.

También me hizo dar cuenta de que la adaptación al cine en la que Leonardo Di Caprio interpreta a Gatsby es una excelente adaptación.

Lo malo

La temática... me cuesta mucho involucrarme en la problemática de la vida aristocrática. Los sacrificios no se sienten tan duros, los sufrimientos no se sienten tan importantes, todo tiene un tono de sobredramatización y exageración que roza el capricho infantil. En el otro extremo está la frivolidad, el desinterés y el desprecio por todo lo que transcurre en el "mundo real".

¡Ya sé! la novela es precisamente una crítica a todo esto que menciono. El problema es que es un tema que me aburre anormemente y es inevitable que le haya jugado en contra …
